LUNAR ECLIPSE DECEMBER 21 2010

The moon will be eclipsed on December 21 at the eve of the winter solstice. The eclipse takes place at 3 degrees cancer at 1:51 PM (GMT). Although it is not a complete eclipse due to the fact that the sun is not at the exact position of the lunar nodes. However, it is only 4 degrees from the northern node.
A lunar eclipse is simply the interposition of the earth between the sun and the moon, with the moon having no light of her own, but that of the sun at the time of their opposition. The lunar nodes are also referred to as the dragon’s head and the dragon’s tail. The dragon’s tail refers to the southern part of the ecliptic where the sun moves at an angle at about 5 degrees and the dragon’s head denotes the northern angle. This particular lunar eclipse is of a greater magnitude, producing an occultation of about 73% of her body.
The duration of the eclipse is that of 1 hour and 43 min taking place in the western quadrant of the ecliptic.
According to Ptolemy in his most notorious work, “Tetrabliblos”, an eclipse in the western quadrant announce “that it will influence the laws, old age, and persons about to die” (p 84). The eclipse occurring in tropical signs as it is in this case, Ptolemy notes; “the tropical signs give warning of changes in the atmosphere and in political affairs” (p 83).
The lord of the eclipse is calculated by the strength and debility of the planets in accordance to House, exaltation, triplicity, term, and face. In this case, Venus was found to have the most dignities and therefore, dominion over the eclipse.
The Hyleg in the lunar eclipse is the giver of life and the moon has precedence. The Alchocoden or the angel is Mars and the Almuten or the planet with the most essential dignities is Venus, which is the queen and the significator of the event. However, after careful consideration of the rules and mathematical calculations set forth by Ptolemy, Saturn which is the prophet seems to be the Lord of the eclipse and not Venus, the queen. His degrees of Hayz and the nearness to his degrees of exaltation, has lead me to render Saturn as the significator of this eclipse.
Ramesey notes; “Again, an eclipse of the Moon in the first face of Cancer excites and stirs up wars” (p. 234) and “in the water triplicity, it promises the death of the vulgar and ignoble sort of people, seditions and rumors of wars and eruptions and floods of sea banks……. If it occurs in Cancer, it denotes a rottenness or corruption of the fruit when it is gathered causing sickness to those that eat them….” (p. 215 Astrologia Munda).
Saturn in the ninth house refers to conservatism in interstate and international commerce, navy, foreign shipping, foreign communication, the internet, law, the supreme court, religion, teachers, publishing, advertising, books, lectures, courts, judges, philanthropic institutions and grants. Henry Coley describes Saturn being lord of eclipse with these words; “… He is generally the cause of corruptions by reasons of cold, more properly he declares continued disease in the bodies of men, as general decay of nature, wasting, or a consumption which hath its origin from some deflux of rhume; he denotes disturbance of the radical humours, fluxes, quartane agues, banishments, poverty, misery, lamentations, vain fears, mortality of old men especially, a scarcity of such cattle as are useful for mankind, afflicting those cattle which escape death with diseases. In the air Saturn stirs up most violent colds, with tedious frosty weather, cloudy and pestilent, misty and foggy, much snow, more destructive than profitable; In rivers and the sea he stirs up strange tempests, sudden shipwrecks, dangerous and difficult voyages, scarcity of fish and water fowl, overflowing of the sea banks, inundations and corruption of rivers. Upon the earth a scarcity of corn and fruit, and most provisions become dear, grass and hay are destroyed by floods and immoderate rain, hail, storms and furious tempests, whence famine may be feared; Aged persons are now afflicted and die more so than former years, also much controversies, malice and envy between men, and consequently many tedious law-suits follow, especially amongst the most rural sort”. (p. 302 Clavis Astrologie Elimata).
Even though Saturn does not come to his precise degree of exaltation this year, due to the fact that he turn retrograde before he can do so, he does however come within 3 degrees of it. Ramesey indicates ; “he is the fore-runner of some great and most notable thing to happen during the revolution, especially in those parts subject to Libra and Saturn: and men shall suffer much loss and detriment in their estates and fortunes, and that his significations shall be of long continuance” (p. 136).
Ramesey as well as Ptolemy agree; “the places subject to the sign in opposition and square thereunto, you may say assuredly taste of its effects” (Ramesey p. 217)
Countries subject to cancer are: Canada, Holland, Iraq, New Zealand, Paraguay, Scotland and United States.
Countries subject to Capricorn are: Afganistan, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, India, Lithuanina, Mexico.
Countries subject to Libra are: Argentina, Burma, China, Egypt, Japan, Siberia & Tibet.
However, because the eclipse is diurnal, not being the governess of day but of night, the effects of the lunar eclipse are somewhat diminished.
As far as time goes, Ptolemy makes this very clear with his statement; “the commencement of the effect, and the period of its general intensity, or strength, are to be inferred from the situation of the place of the eclipse with respect to the angles…. In the western horizon, the effect will begin in the third four months, and its general intensity in the last third part of its whole duration”(p.79 Tetrabiblos). Here we have to remember that Ptolemy is referring to a solar eclipse which effects are subject to the season or revolution, however, the lunar eclipse is calculated by 10 days which is the equivalent to the 4 solar months. Therefore, the effects of the eclipse will be notable approximately 20 days after the eclipse and the height of its effects will be felt in the last part of the month.
There were other peculiarities about the eclipse which at the risk of overextending myself, I will briefly make mention of. The first was the Sun and Mercury in the 12th house. A planet combust by the sun will denote something hidden and mostly notably in the 12th house and in Sagittarius. In world astrology, the Sun represents the person in power and in a nation’s chart, it would represent the President, King, Prime Minister and the like. Here, we have Mercury not only combust, but also retrograde. The lord of the 12th house is sitting in the 2nd house leading me to believe that there will be great loss of money in foreign lands and the news of that loss is being concealed by the person of power. There is however, one more thing that seems to stand out.. Mercury is the lord of the 6th house in the eclipse… house of sickness and workers and positioned in Sagittarius denotes, sickness of workers in a foreign land. Here ends the judgment for the eclipse which will obviously be modified whether for better or worse, by the testimonies of the vernal solstice.
