Sagittarius decans or phases are;

• Mercury which has his phases from 0-10 degree Sagittarius. This Decan is represented by the eight of wands in the minor arcana. In this part of the constellation Lyra was observed, which means “the harp”, a beautiful stringed instrument and oldest of musical inventions, therefore, it was attributed to the gods. The harp grants the mighty archer inspiration in the pursuit of valour, strength and intrepidity that the associated Vega, the brightest star in Lyra denotes, which means “Victory”. According to Greek mythology, the Lyre was created and crafted by Hermes for his brother Apollo who eventually gave it to Orpheus. Broken hearted by the death of his love, Eurydice, Orpheus traveled in to the underworld using the Lyre to enchant its beastly creatures, but was unsuccessful in bringing back his love from the underworld.

• The Moon has the second phases from 10-20 degrees Sagittarius represented by the nine of wands. In this part of the constellation “Ara” meaning “Altar” and therefore, the holy ground in any sanctuary. The Arabs called it “Al Mugamra” meaning “the completing”. It is at the altar that the sacrifice is set, a time of affliction, sorrow and perturbation of the mind to burn away all difficulty and pollution within the soul.

• Lastly, Saturn holds the last phase from 20-30 degrees Sagittarius and its card is the ten of wands. Within this part of the constellation we observe Draco, a serpentine figure, coiled around the “Ara” guarding its treasure. The “dragon” as it was called, seems to confront once again the “sorrowful heart” who has laid down the sacrifice on the altar, with obstinacy, wilfulness, cruelty and tyranny, so as to test the soul in the truthfulness of its sacrifice.

The tarot card in the major arcana, representing the sign is XIV TEMPERANCE and the card representing it’s ruling planet Jupiter is X THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE.

Its direction is west and the tail of the dragon is exalted in Sagittarius, Mercury faces its detriment, and the head of the dragon is in its fall when in the sign. According to William Lilly, the sun has its joy in Sagittarius.
